The birthday girl decided she wanted to have her party at the beach. The suggestions I made were beach, trampoline place, pool party or ice skating. I was open to other suggestions she had in mind as well, but she knew what she wanted right away – a party on the beach. We chose this particular beach because it had tables, bathrooms and playground equipment. She was delighted as you can see!

My dear husband has been super busy with a work deadline, so I have been dragging my kids around to party stores and decorating stores for the past week and they have been so patient with me while I scour recipe websites and send virtual invitations. My lovely neighbor and friend helped on the day of the party for 6 hours! And her wonderful husband took all of these fabulous photos – we are so lucky to have such giving and talented friends!

When I asked Zen what kind of cake she would like for her birthday, she said she wanted an apple cake. I then asked her if there is anything else she would like to have at her party and she replied “candy canes”, so I went with an apple and candy theme.

We did do-it-yourself favor bags and the tiny guests filled their own boxes with all sorts of different candy, apples, super bouncing balls and Chinese yo-yos which were set up as table displays.

I always treasure any family photo we can get together! We had a lovely backdrop with sailboats and pelicans, paddleboarders and even a gondola. My dear husband decided to pick up a last minute pinata which was a huge hit. And check out those apple shaped sandwiches my friend made.

The birthday girl decided to open presents as they arrived. She was just as happy with every card as she was with each gift. This girl is pure joy!

She got a few new wonderful books and wanted to read them as soon as she opened them. She is SO in the moment – love that about her.

The very gracious big sister who enjoyed the party just as much.

Zen got shy when she became the center of attention and everyone was singing happy birthday to her. She didn’t want to blow the candle out with such an audience, so Ali was happy to assist.

Growing up on the east coast, we never had pinatas, but in Southern California – why not!

Zen looks on at the debauchery of many friends hitting a rather large number 3 with a huge stick. She had never seen such a thing and declined from participating but was indeed intrigued.

‘Cleaning up’ the loot from the pinata.
